Title: One of my fave. landmarks on its way to it's 50th B-day.
Post by: Ceej on July 17, 2023, 04:50:22 PM
One of Canada's most famous landmarks, the CN Tower, was the world's tallest free standing structure for just about 34 years, standing at just over 1815 feet tall.

However,50 years ago today (July 17th 1973), it was a baby, standing at barely 60 feet tall from the top of it's foundation.

I was only 9 years old ,but I remember the buzz going on at the time about this thing being built.

A few years later after it was built , I remember my parents taking us to see it. My Mom was afraid of heights so she would not go up in it. My Dad took me up with him. I remember the ride up in the glass elevator car so you can see out as you are going up. Pretty wild.

Anyway it's crazy  to think that half a century has passed since it was built.  :o

Thanks for posting this Ceej.  (())  :thumb:

I rarely travel outside the USA but had the opportunity to visit Toronto back in 2004.  Living in Seattle, I've been up the Space Needle many times but NOTHING like a trip up the CN Tower.  A great experience and memory.

I had the pleasure of visiting the tower with a most wonderful host that goes by the name of Ceej, eh?  While we didn't have the opportunity to ascend the tower, we did visit the aquarium and train museum near the base of it.  Both of those were well worth seeing and Ceej is a wealth of historical knowledge.

I hope to get back some time and get to go up the tower with Ceej. 8)  I'll pass on the bungie experience up there.

Thanks guys  :)

I'm glad you liked this, and I enjoyed hearing of your memories and experiences  :)

Z, your very generous and I'd be happy to take you the tower if you come back this way again  :)

The CN tower may not be the tallest in the world, but it's still the tallest in North America.
In just just one week's time from the picture in my first post, the tower grew to this height, which is approximately 100 or so feet above it's foundation.

I was staggering and smashing my through YouTube  as I normally do and came across this old school video on the building of the CN Tower in Toronto.

Something in my brain snapped and reminded me about Ceej's post on the tower's 50th B-day. There is likely to be a bunch of vids online on this subject but I believe this one to be the first.

I trust that Ceej won't mind that I post it here for anyone who is interested.

Pretty cool! Love to see the engineering that went into these mega structures.  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

I found another vid worth looking at.
It's a more recent creation and talks more about the engineering that went behind the CN Tower.
