Five Years with Dressember
« on: December 10, 2021, 08:18:27 AM »
Those who have followed my posts at Our Doll Community may remember that I support several organizations that strive to make the world a better place. Among those are:
Susan G. Komen of Northwest Ohio - Breast Cancer Research and patient assistance
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital - Research and patient care for childhood cancers of all types
Dressember Foundation - Anti-slavery
Ovarian Cancer Connection - A local group for Ovarian Cancer Research and patient assistance
A21 - Abolitionists in the 21st Century - Anti-slavery
International Justice Mission - Anti-slavery
The Cousteau Society - Exploration, research, and advocacy for the world's oceans
The Planetary Society - Exploration, research, and advocacy for the cosmos and human spaceflight

Since Feodora is the perfect model for clothing and gear available for these organizations, (and a whole lot better looking than me!), I let her model these items. We had a good run from 2012 until 2018 when KA (ourdoll1) decided that "fundraisers" violated the ODC terms of use. It may have something to do with that fact that I became his 'political enemy' when I bought a book.

Since KA made that determination, I removed every fundraiser post from the ODC forum, and every associated photo from the ODC gallery. Those posts and photos are currently at Arimecibo Island.

I wanted a mannequin for studio and location photography when I discovered the world of life-sized dolls. After learning with a few inflatables, I lucked into an Anatomical Doll. Later on, I was introduced to Dressember (Dress + December = Dressember), one of many groups that fight against human slavery and sex trafficking. As part of their operations and in-house fundraising, they run a marketplace that handles mostly Womens apparel - perfect for a fashion model! Over the years (2018 and on), I acquired several dresses and other items through the Dressember marketplace. Below is a partial listing of those items, modeled by the lovely Feodora. (My ugly mug is in some photos.)

Alice and Olivia Gold Beaded Dress

Five years ago (2017), I began watching the ABC Drama "Once Upon A Time". The show first aired in 2011, so I was watching it on the DVDs. Over the first three seasons, I became interested in actress Jennifer Morrison. That interest grew into a full-blown crush.

While the show was still running, there was a blog (web log) about the show, the cast, and the crew. I had not yet signed up for either InstaGram or Twitter, but there was an image (screenshot) from Jennifer's InstaGram account that showed her support for Dressember. Intrigued, I looked it up. I was appalled to learn that slavery still existed in the twenty-first century. Dressember, in partnership with (at the time) a dozen other organizations were doing what they could to eradicate slavery and sex trafficking. Since I already supported other humanitarian efforts, I jumped on board. See The Dressember Documentary

elegantees (Elegant Tee Shirts) is a commercial garment business that provides employment for women and men who are rescued from the slavery and sex trades in Kathmandu, Nepal. Viable employment, at a decent wage, is one of the pillars of the rescue and restore plan that helps prevent people from falling back into the slavery and sex trades.

Although Dressember is a non-profit organization, they were able to market the clothing provided by elegantees. Dressember cultivated relationships with other companies that also support the anti-slavery and anti-sex trafficking initiatives. When the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic closed Nepal, Dressember was forced to look elsewhere for garments. They have also cultivated celebrity partnerships for the Dressember Boutique, where fans can purchase items that were owned by their favorites, and the donated to Dressember to help raise funds. Dressember maintains an Ethical Fashion Directory, where employees work in a safe environment for decent hours at a sustainable wage.

The "Jen" dress in Red, Black, and Blue designed by Jennifer Morrison

When I buy a dress that I know was worn by Jennifer Morrison, I know that she had that dress next to her heart. When I put that dress on Feodora, and then hug her, I have that dress next to my heart. It is not the same as if I hugged Jen, but at least is it something. Other fans who buy items from their favorite people will tell of that same connection between them and the person that they like.
