A lot of 'us' here are 'old timers' and will remember taboo-san and his GREAT contributions to the hobby. Even though his site hadn't been updated for over a decade, it WAS still out there and the information was at least valuable for historical purposes.
The URL was dolldataroom.org. I guess I was thinking about Ev been gone. So I tried to check taboo's site. I always 'go in' with javascript disabled first. The site had always worked without javascript. My experience this morning, which I will describe next, is just 'one more reason' why javascript sux, is used too often to attack users, and 'should' (IMHO) be restricted (ain't going to happen because only ur-geeks like me care).
I have four browsers and only one of them (Chrome) typically has javascript enabled. When the site didn't work without javascript on another browser, I tried Chrome. My computer 'sort of' locked up: the screen went to some 'nasty' display 'warning' me some BS about misuse of my IP address (BS because my ISP assigns private IP addresses to customers). An audio played 'warning' me about the 'terrible' thing happening and telling me to call 'Apple'. The supposed phone number to call 'Apple' was both on the screen and in the audio message. Most of you guys know that I was a 'computer' pro for decades and did lots of what is now called 'cybersecurity'. (I hate to call it IT because, to me, Information Technology is an oxymoron.) This 'smelled' like a scam. The LAST thing I was going to do was call that number. Chrome was locked - I couldn't get out of that Chrome window with any of the usual hot keys or clickable links. Fortunately, the operating system hot keys still worked AND I have a system monitor application which enables the forced termination of processes. I terminated the process that was taking the most CPU and, boom, the BS was gone --- 'very easy, very quick'. It didn't even have to kill the 10 other Chrome tabs I had open.
So warnings and concerns:
- Don't try to access dolldataroom.org. Admiral Ackbar (and scrappy) say(s) ''it's a trap''
- if anybody knows how to find out what became of taboo's REAL site, please let the rest of us know
- if anybody knows how to find out what became of taboo-san himself, please let the rest of us know. There was a rumor years ago that the Yakuza got him.
- I haven't checked yet, but I'll guess that taboo's site is still accessible via the Wayback Machine
